Do’s and Don’ts When Using an Electric Blanket
Electric blankets are the perfect companion during chilly winter days when you’re curled up on the couch. However, they can be quite dangerous if used improperly, and can even lead to fire hazards. Before plugging in an electric blanket, consider the following electric blanket do’s and don'ts from top electric contractors.
Do’s
Read the label carefully
Go through the manufacturer’s label to see if the blanket has been certified by a testing laboratory (e.g., UL). Also, make sure that the blanket hasn’t been recalled by checking the Consumer Product Safety Commission website.
Keep the electric blanket flat when using
Ensure there are no bunched-up areas or folds, since they can create excessive amounts of heat. Users should keep the electric blanket spread out flat over themselves, not under them or squeezed to one side.
Shut the blanket off before retiring for the night
If the electric blanket doesn’t come with a timer, don’t forget to unplug it before going to bed. Give the blanket some time to cool off before you put it away.
Mind the cords
Wrap the blanket’s cords up carefully to avoid tripping on them if no-one is using the blanket.
Get rid of an old blanket
Discard the electric blanket when it seems that it’s no longer working efficiently.
Don’ts
Don’t use the blanket on an inadequate bed
Never use electric blankets on pull-out or adjustable sofas, waterbeds, hospital-style beds, or recliners. Additionally, don’t use electric blankets and heated mattresses simultaneously since overheating can occur.
Don’t use old electric blankets
Most heating pad and electric blanket fires occur with pads and blankets that are older than 10 years. On the other hand, newer electric blankets are less susceptible to wear and tear, and operate with rheostats. These devices control the heat by monitoring the user’s and the blanket’s temperatures.
Don’t place any objects on the electric blanket
Be sure not to put anything on the blanket or sit on it either unless the blanket’s design allows it. Otherwise, the blanket’s electric coils can be damaged.
Don’t use spin cycles
Spin cycles turn and tug on the blanket that can damage the internal coils. If the blanket has to be washed, let it air-dry.
Keep pets away from the blanket
Dog and cat claws can rip and tear electric blankets, exposing the wiring and creating fire hazards. If keeping pets away is impossible, consider buying a low-voltage model blanket.
Don’t put cords under the mattress
Running cords underneath the mattress can create friction, which traps excess heat and damages the cord.
